Welcome to the first Big Z's Field Report. This is where we'll post restock news, packing notes, care reminders, and the occasional behind-the-scenes look at how we run things. Today: the Spice scale, because it's the first thing you see on every listing.
What "Spice" actually measures
Spice is not just venom. Every fella gets a 1β5 score that blends basic care difficulty, temperament, speed, defensiveness, escape risk, humidity/temperature sensitivity, and Big Z's final read on the whole animal. A timid species can still rate hotter if the setup is fussy. A calmer animal can rate lower if it's less likely to bolt, posture, or strike first.
- Spice 1 β Kid Safe: slow movers, low-defense fellas, simple care. A real win on day one.
- Spice 2 β Beginner: a touch more fire, still forgiving, a little more setup awareness.
- Spice 3 β Intermediate: faster animals, tighter setups, more attitude. Rewards keepers who know feeding and humidity.
- Spice 4 β Advanced: defensive postures, real escape risk, stricter enclosure tolerances. Buy with a plan.
- Spice 5 β Extreme: venom, speed, defensiveness, or sensitivity. Reserved for keepers who've already done the work β and we ask you to message us before checkout.
The rating is a starting point, not a permission slip
The Spice number tells you roughly how demanding an animal is. It does not guarantee temperament, safety, or outcome β every invertebrate is an individual. Read the care guide that ships free with every order, and on Spice 4 and 5, DM Big Z first so we can confirm the enclosure plan and a safe ship window together.
How we ship
Every live animal is packed weather-aware. We check the forecast at our end, your delivery address, and the carrier hubs in between, and we hold animals β at no extra charge β until conditions are safe. You'll always get tracking and an arrival window before ship day.
