Every animal is rated 1 to 5 on care, temperament, speed and defense. Higher numbers need more experience. The rating is about keeping, not handling.
New to inverts? Let’s start at Spice 1 or 2!
Spice 1 · Kid Friendly
Slow, calm and simple to keep.
- Who it’s for
- First-time keepers, families and classrooms, with an adult in charge of care.
- What to expect
- Slow movement, lots of hiding, little defensive behavior.
- The habitat
- A simple enclosure, the right substrate and light misting. A few minutes a week.
Spice 2 · Beginner
A small step up. Still forgiving, a little more active.
- Who it’s for
- Keepers who did well with a Spice 1 animal.
- What to expect
- More movement, some defensive posturing and feeding with tongs.
- The habitat
- A proper enclosure, a basic moisture or heat gradient and a quick check every day or two.
Spice 3 · Intermediate
Faster and more defensive, with stricter care needs.
- Who it’s for
- Keepers who have raised an animal through at least one molt.
- What to expect
- Sudden bursts of speed, threat displays and catch-cup maintenance.
- The habitat
- Tighter limits on humidity, ventilation and temperature. The enclosure has to be escape-proof.
Spice 4 · Advanced
Fast, defensive animals. Mistakes have real consequences.
- Who it’s for
- Experienced keepers who have kept Spice 3 animals well.
- What to expect
- Very fast movement, strong threat displays and fast strikes at feeding time.
- The habitat
- A locking, escape-proof enclosure, stable conditions and a lid check before every opening.
Display only. These fellas are fast and defensive, and a bite or sting can need medical care. Check your local laws before you order.
Spice 5 · Extreme
The top of the scale. Some carry medically significant venom.
- Who it’s for
- Keepers with real experience, the right tools and a plan for a bite or sting.
- What to expect
- Fast strikes, constant defensiveness and a strict routine for every maintenance session.
- The habitat
- Maximum security: a locking enclosure, a second layer of containment and a closed room.
Read before you buy. Some of these animals carry medically significant venom. Keep them locked up inside a second layer of containment, out of reach of kids and pets, and check your local laws before you order.
