Chicobolus spinigerus, the Florida Ivory Millipede, is the US-native classic: a 4-to-5-inch cylinder that matures into a gorgeous alternating pattern of warm cream and dark coffee bands, rippling along on a wave of tiny legs. Hardy, easy, and absurdly photogenic: one of the prettiest invertebrates you can keep on a shelf.

It is also one of the most low-stress: completely harmless (worst case, a curl-up and a mild almond-scented secretion, wash your hands), a happy composter that eats its own substrate of oak leaf litter and rotting hardwood, and content in a small group.
