Learn the Spice System
One number, 1 to 5, that tells you how hot a fella is to keep. Big Z got tired of the endless naming debates: every forum had its own labels, and "beginner-friendly" was getting slapped on tarantulas that bite. So we built our own. Spice 1 to 5 pulls from real keeper forums, published care guides, working keeper notes, and Big Z's own logs, distilled into one number beginners AND experienced keepers can actually agree on. Six lenses go in (care, temper, speed, venom, escape, and Big Z's read of the whole fella), so a timid SpecieZs can rate hotter if the setup is unforgiving, and a calmer animal can rate lower if it's slow to bolt.

What it actually feels like
Slow crawls, almost no defensive posture, basically zero startle response. You can walk into the room, lift the lid, and the fella keeps doing fella things.
Sit this one out if
Honestly nobody. If you want a fast, showy animal you might find Spice 1 a little sleepy.
Big Z says
Start here. Watching a pill millipede curl into your palm is the gateway moment.

- Vibe
- Deliberate movement, mild defensive postures, real tong-feeding.

What it actually feels like
Deliberate movement, mild defensive postures, a little more personality. Tong-feed and you will see a real strike. Hold-friendly with calm hands.
Sit this one out if
Anyone scared of any movement, or kids under 8 without an adult on the lid.
Big Z says
Sweet spot for most adult first-time keepers. Emperors basically raise themselves.
-
Spice 3 Intermediate
Faster, fussier, more opinionated. Reads keeper cues now.
- Who
- Keepers with at least one successful molt or breed under their belt.
- Vibe
- Sudden bursts of speed, threat displays, real catch-cup work.
- Setup
- Tighter tolerances on humidity, vent, and temp. Escape-proof, not just resistant.
Top picks- Darth Maul Tarantula
- Madagascan Black Scorpion
- Florida Bark Scorpion

What it actually feels like
Sudden bursts of speed, real threat displays, opinions about humidity and vent placement. Reads keeper cues, so it spooks if you do.
Sit this one out if
First-time keepers, and anyone who has not kept a fella through a full molt cycle yet.
Big Z says
The most rewarding tier if you actually love the hobby. Just respect the speed.
-
Spice 4 Advanced
Hot setups, fast animals, real consequences for sloppy work.
- Who
- Experienced keepers with multiple successful tiers behind them.
- Vibe
- Blink-and-miss-it speed, hard threat displays, fast-strike feeding.
- Setup
- Sealed and locking, exact climate, inspect before every interaction.
Top picks- Horrid King Assassin Bug
- Goliath Birdeater Tarantula
- Malaysian Cherry Red Centipede

What it actually feels like
Blink-and-miss-it speed, hard threat displays, fast strikes. Lid management matters as much as enclosure design.
Sit this one out if
Anyone without a proven catch-cup workflow, a backup enclosure, or someone to call if a fella gets out.
Big Z says
If you have to ask if you're ready, you're not ready. Message me first; we'll figure it out.

Spice 5 Extreme

- Vibe
- Fast strikes, constant defensive posture, ritualized maintenance.
- Setup

Big Z reserves the right to say no. Spice 5 goes home with the right keeper or it doesn't.
