Learn the Spice System

One number from 1 to 5 for how demanding an animal is to keep. Every forum used its own labels, and "beginner-friendly" kept showing up on tarantulas that bite, so Big Z made this scale. Each rating weighs six things: care, temperament, speed, venom, escape risk and Big Z’s own read of the species. A calm species can still rate higher when its setup is unforgiving, and a nervous one can rate lower when it rarely bolts.

Kid Friendly
Slow, calm and simple to keep.
Who
First-time keepers, families and classrooms, with an adult in charge of care.
Expect
Slow movement, lots of hiding, little defensive behavior.
Setup
A simple enclosure, the right substrate and light misting. A few minutes a week.

Anyone who wants a fast, active animal. Spice 1 can seem a little slow.

A good level for most adult first-time keepers. Emperor scorpions are a good example: hardy and forgiving.

Intermediate
Faster and more defensive, with stricter care needs.
Who
Keepers who have raised an animal through at least one molt.
Expect
Sudden bursts of speed, threat displays and catch-cup maintenance.
Setup
Tighter limits on humidity, ventilation and temperature. The enclosure has to be escape-proof.

A locking, escape-proof enclosure, stable conditions and a lid check before every opening.
