The African Giant Black Millipede, Archispirostreptus gigas, is one of the largest millipedes in the world, reaching about 12 inches. It is glossy black and comes from the coastal forests of East Africa.
It is slow and calm, can live 7 to 10 years or more and does well in a group. It eats its substrate, so a deep bed of hardwood leaf litter and rotting wood is the feeding plan. Millipedes don’t bite or sting. When stressed they curl up and can release a fluid that irritates skin, so wash your hands after maintenance.
