About this Fella

Chocolate Desert Millipede for sale from Big Z's (Orthoporus ornatus). Spice-rated keeper notes, care guidance, and live-arrival packing where eligible.

The Southwest's biggest native millipede, and it wants its air bone dry

Orthoporus ornatus, the Chocolate Desert Millipede, is a hardy semi-arid heavyweight that roams the deserts of Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. This one wears the dark chocolate-brown color form, a glossy segmented rope that reaches 4 to 5 inches and lives for years. A proven desert native through and through.

Gentle and easy to work with, this is a hands-open, no-squeezing kind of animal. It can seep a mild staining secretion, so wash your hands after handling. The one thing you absolutely have to get right: this is a desert animal, not a rainforest one. Keep it drier than a tropical millipede, with strong cross-ventilation, mostly dry substrate over hardwood leaf litter, and just one lightly damp corner. Too-wet substrate and stale air are the number-one killers, which is what earns this species its Intermediate, Spice 3 rating. The care guide has the full arid build.

The numbers live in the care guide. Enclosure size, temps, humidity, feeding schedule, premolt signs, handling boundaries: it's all in the care guide for this exact fella. Start with the full Advanced guide, or click for the quick Open the Simple version →
