Millipedes are the quiet end of the shop: giants, ivories and pill millipedes, Spice 1 through 3. They eat rotting leaves and wood, want to be left alone to dig, and reward you by being out at night in a tank that looks like a forest floor. The African Giant Millipede is Spice 1, the easiest lane we have.

Beginner-friendly does not mean touch-friendly. Many millipedes defend themselves with a fluid that stains skin and stings eyes, so they are watch-and-feed animals: hands stay out, kids keep them with an adult, and tongs do the moving.

Our substrate rule is simple: no coco fiber for millipedes. They need hardwood leaf litter and decaying wood as both bedding and food, kept damp, deep enough to burrow and molt in, with cuttlebone or crushed eggshell for calcium. We size millipede enclosures at two to three times the body length, and many species do well in groups. Are millipedes good first inverts?

Yes. Spice 1 is the easiest lane we have, and the giant millipedes sit in it: slow, long-lived and happy to be left alone. Beginner-friendly still means hands off. Many millipedes release a defensive fluid that stains skin and irritates eyes, so they are watch-and-feed animals and kids keep them with an adult.

What do millipedes eat?

Rotting hardwood leaves and decaying wood are the main course and the bedding at the same time, so a millipede tank is always being eaten. Add a slice of vegetable or fruit a few times a week, take it out before it molds, and keep cuttlebone or crushed eggshell in the tank for calcium.

What substrate and enclosure does a millipede need?
