Millipede
This fella is tiny enough that monitoring matters more than extra space, so the best checkout pair is the tiny square starter.
Slow, low-defense, easy care. A win for first-time keepers and family setups.
The millipede that builds you a self-running colony
Leptogoniulus sorornus, the Hothouse Whiteleg, is a small tropical species with a neat trick: it is prolific. Set a few up in a humid bioactive bin and they will quietly multiply on their own until you have a self-sustaining little colony rippling through the leaf litter: a dark body trimmed with the contrasting pale legs that give it its name.
It is a perfect “starter colony” animal: totally harmless, peaceful, dirt-cheap to keep, and a tireless recycler of decaying leaves and wood (which doubles as the food). Great as a feeder or cleanup population, great as a low-effort display, and a genuinely satisfying first project for anyone who wants to watch a bioactive setup come alive on its own.
The numbers live in the care guide. Enclosure size, temps, humidity, feeding schedule, premolt signs, handling boundaries: it's all in the care guide for this exact fella. Start with the full Advanced guide, or click for the quick Open the Simple version →
