Enclosure & Microclimate
  • This species is excellent for humid display cups and colony-style setups. It can reproduce readily when stable.
  • Use fine ventilation or mesh for young animals. Tiny juveniles can exploit surprisingly small gaps.
  • Place that fine mesh low on two opposite walls rather than only in the lid, so air crosses the substrate surface. A dense colony in a consistently moist bin puts a lot of waste and respiration into a small volume, and without cross flow the substrate composts anaerobically: sour smell, mite bloom, and a colony that stops breeding.
  • Ventilation and ambient humidity pull against each other. Hold the moisture in the substrate and let the vents flow rather than sealing the cup to keep humidity up. On a colony setup this is the difference between a bin you top up and a bin you have to rebuild.
  • Judge by squeeze and smell rather than by gauge. Lower substrate clumps like a wrung-out sponge with no free water and smells earthy. Sour means more air and fresh substrate.
  • Keep a shallow dish packed with pebbles or coarse grit so the waterline sits below the rim. With a prolific breeder there are pinhead juveniles around at all times, and they drown in water depths the adults walk through.
  • Mist under the leaf litter rather than over the surface. The litter layer is where the colony grazes and where the juveniles live, so keeping the damp there and the surface breathable serves both.
Feeding, Growth & Maintenance
  • Add leaf litter in layers and maintain a mossy moisture zone.
  • Molting: millipedes molt underground, sealing into a chamber and going still for days or weeks. Never dig up or disturb a buried animal, keep that part of the substrate from drying out, and keep cuttlebone available, since they eat the shed exoskeleton to reclaim calcium.
