Keeper notes

From the Emperor, the heavyweight that made scorpions a pet, to the Arizona bark scorpion we collect ourselves under UV, every scorpion in this lane is kept and shipped by us from Phoenix. Each card carries a Spice level from 1 to 5. Spice is a keeper rating, not a handling rating: care difficulty, speed, defensiveness and how much the venom matters. Every scorpion is venomous and none of them is a handling animal.

The venom question gets plain language on every page. Most of the lane is Spice 2 and 3. The medically significant genera, Centruroides, Hottentotta, Parabuthus and Androctonus, are Spice 5: they carry a risk warning on the card, ship overnight or pickup only, and belong with experienced keepers who already run secure, locking enclosures.

Setups follow one rule: floor space at least twice the body length, a hide, a shallow water dish and substrate matched to the species. Desert burrowers do well in a Burrow Buddy on our Desert Burrow or Semi-Arid mix. Emperors and other tropical species want the Tropical Burrow mix and more moisture. Bark scorpions climb, so they do well in a Bark Buddy with cork. Are pet scorpions dangerous?

Every scorpion is venomous, so every scorpion gets respect, a locking lid and a catch cup. Most species in this lane are Spice 2 or 3. A few are Spice 5 and medically significant, and they say so on the page in plain words. Spice is a care rating, not permission to handle: no scorpion here is a handling animal.

What is a good first scorpion?

The Emperor Scorpion (Pandinus imperator) is the classic first scorpion for a reason: big, slow, long-lived, Spice 2 on our shelf, and forgiving of a beginner setup as long as it has moisture, a hide and room to dig. Our Best Beginner Scorpions page lists the rest of the lane starters.

What setup does a scorpion need?

Floor space at least twice the body length, substrate it can dig (deep for burrowers), a hide, a shallow water dish and a locking lid, plus climbing bark for the species that climb.
