About this Fella

Black Hole Spider for sale from Big Z's (Kukulcania hibernalis). Spice-rated keeper notes, care guidance, and live-arrival packing where eligible.

Kukulcania hibernalis (Black Hole Spider / Southern House Spider)

The easiest, most hands-off display spider in the hobby, and one of the cheapest ways to put a real web-builder on your shelf. This jet-black crevice weaver moves into a crack, spins a flat mat of woolly lace around the entrance, and turns one corner of the tank into a living trap you get to watch work every night. Big for a house spider at a 2 to 3 inch leg span, harmless to people, and she can hold the same doorway for years. Grab a Black Hole Spider today and give your collection the web everyone asks about.

Why do hobbyists keep Kukulcania hibernalis?

  • The Web: a wide mat of cribellate lace that funnels into one dark hole. It grows every week and it works: anything that touches it gets pulled in.
  • Hands-Off and Harmless: shy, reluctant to bite, and not medically significant. The perfect first true spider and a safe one for a kid's room.
  • Years of Display: females are long-lived and almost never leave the retreat. Set it up once and watch it for years.
  • Tiny Footprint: a small enclosure is all she needs. A big show in a small cube.

How should Kukulcania hibernalis be kept?

  • Adult Size: females reach a 2 to 3 inch leg span with a thick, velvet-black body. Males are smaller, brown and long-legged (and get mistaken for brown recluses every spring).
  • Enclosure: a 4 to 8 inch cube is plenty. Lean a slab of cork bark against the glass or give her a slot in a piece of wood: the crevice is the whole setup. She builds the web around its mouth.
  • Temperature: 70 to 85 degrees F. Normal room temperature is perfect.
  • Humidity: dry-leaning. Coco fiber or sand kept mostly dry with a light mist on the walls once a week.
  • Water: she drinks the mist. A bottle-cap dish is optional.
  • Diet: crickets or small roaches once or twice a week, dropped near the lace after dark.
  • Temperament: secretive and calm. A display animal: she lives in the crevice, you watch the lace move. Handling is not needed and not recommended.

Are there any additional notes or considerations?

  • Wild-Caught: field-collected adults and subadults from the Southeast, settled and feeding.
  • Patience Pays: she builds the retreat in the first few nights and the web only grows from there. Do not clean the lace away; it is the attraction.
  • Spice Level 1: Kid Safe. One animal, shipped live on FedEx Overnight. Live Arrival Guarantee on overnight orders.

The numbers live in the care guide. Enclosure size, temps, humidity, feeding schedule, premolt signs, handling boundaries: it's all in the care guide for this exact fella. Start with the full Advanced guide, or click for the quick Open the Simple version →
