Arizona Blonde Tarantula
Big Z's Quick Verdict: A desert tarantula and one of the calmest tarantulas on the beginner shelf: dry substrate, a hide, and a full water dish are the whole job. It grows slowly and lives a long time; brief contact is optional, but a drop can kill it.
Group: TarantulasDifficulty: Spice 2: BeginnerSetup: Terrestrial/fossorial (dry)Handling: Brief contact tolerated, not encouraged
Use This Guide Safely
- Confirm the exact animal. Match this guide to the species, locality, size, and life stage on your label. If the ID is uncertain, use the more conservative part of the range and ask before changing the setup.
- Change one thing at a time. Treat temperature and humidity as target zones, then watch posture, burrowing, drinking, feeding, and molt behavior before making another adjustment.
- Respect the handling boundary. If the guide says no handling, fast, defensive, or medically significant, plan transfers with catch cups, locked lids, and no bare hands. For serious bites, stings, or symptoms, seek emergency medical care.

Recommended Big Z's Setup
- Baby Buddy: spiderlings only, escape-proof ventilation; rehouse up before it is cramped.
- Burrow Buddy: grow-out through juvenile and subadult.
- Larger custom dry terrestrial build for adults; floor space rather than height.
Critical Notes
- A fall onto a hard surface can split the abdomen; this is usually fatal. Never handle near a molt or when freshly molted.
- Carries a dense patch of urticating hairs and will flick them when pushed; a female rears up and shows fangs on contact.
- Decades at small sizes means decades of drowning risk. Keep pebbles or coarse grit in the water dish permanently.
- Glacially slow growth; often a decade or more to maturity.
- Long fasts are completely normal. Judge by body condition, not the calendar.
Care Basics
- A fall can be fatal; handle rarely if at all, and never near a molt.
- If you do make brief contact, keep it low over something soft, then wash your hands and keep them away from your eyes.
- Keep 75-88°F with no concentrated hot spot; cool winter dips are fine.
- Low horizontal enclosure, 3-4 in of dry packed substrate, anchored cork hide.
- Keep the surface dry; any moisture goes in one lower corner under the hide.
- Cross-ventilate low on two opposite walls at substrate level.
- Keep a pebble-filled water dish full on the drier side.
- Feed by abdomen condition, not the calendar; pull any uneaten prey and leave her alone.
Feeding, Growth & Maintenance
- Offer a cricket, roach or mealworm every 7-10 days. This species often refuses food for weeks or months; judge by body condition, not the calendar.
- Premolt: sluggish, seals up, stops eating for days to weeks (sometimes longer). Pull uneaten feeders and wait 5-10 days after the molt to feed again.
- Do not handle around a molt either way: a fresh molt is soft and a premolt spider is heavy, and both make a fall worse.

Enclosure Format / Size Class

- Dry horizontal terrestrial burrow setup for juveniles and adults.
- Larger floor-space dry build for adult females.

Simple Care

Advanced Keeper Notes
Enclosure & Microclimate
- A dry sand and topsoil mix, a water dish and a hide is the entire setup. One of the least demanding tarantulas in the hobby.
- More airflow is always better here. Ambient sits at 35-50% on its own and can drop lower without concern; it hydrates from the dish, not the air.
- Low vents on two opposite walls keep the area under the hide from holding a damp pocket after a dish spill.
- Judge by hand rather than by gauge. Substrate should read dry except right around the dish, and any spill should dry back within a day or two.
- Keep the dish full with pebbles or coarse grit so the waterline sits below the rim; this species takes years to mature, so it stays small enough to drown for a long time.
Possible Origin / Range
- Likely native range: Southern Arizona: Grand Canyon south to the Colorado River, into southwestern New Mexico. Sonoran Desert scrub and dry grassland. No Mexican range is confirmed.
- Habitat translation: A dry, open-floor terrestrial enclosure: sand and topsoil mix, a hide she can get completely under, and a permanently full water dish with pebbles in it. No misting, no damp corner, and floor space rather than height.
Advanced Keeper Details
- No external stridulation organs and only type I urticating setae, so there is no audible warning before she flicks hairs or bolts.
- The urticating patch runs roughly 9,800-11,400 hairs per square millimeter, with over a million sheddable hairs between molts.
- Not CITES-listed (unlike Aphonopelma albiceps, which is Appendix II).
- No confirmed human bite case is on record for this genus; hairs and falls are the real risk, not the bite.
