About this Fella

Texas Giant Vinegaroon for sale from Big Z's (Mastigoproctus giganteus). Spice-rated keeper notes, care guidance, and live-arrival packing where eligible.

No venom, no sting, just a shot of vinegar aimed at your eyes

Mastigoproctus giganteus, the Texas Giant Vinegaroon, is the true giant whip scorpion of Texas and northeastern Mexico, named as its own species in the 2018 revision that split the old giganteus complex from the Florida form. Picture a large, dark arachnid with heavy pinching pedipalps and a long tail-like flagellum that trails behind it like a living antenna, sweeping the dark for information rather than swinging as a weapon. It is a genuine living fossil, and its one real defense is the strangest in the room: a fine spray of concentrated acetic acid, actual vinegar, aimed straight at whatever is bothering it.

This is a beginner-friendly softie with a catch. It has no venom and no sting, and that vinegar spray is harmless on skin but genuinely irritating to the eyes, so keep handling gentle and rare, protect your face, and wash your hands after any contact. Slow, long-lived, and a dedicated burrower, it wants deep, lightly moist substrate to dig into, a snug hide, and a shallow water dish, then it rewards you by being patient and quietly weird. Perfect for a first arachnid keeper who likes an oddball with a defense mechanism most animals cannot match. Read the full care guide before you set up its burrow.

The numbers live in the care guide. Enclosure size, temps, humidity, feeding schedule, premolt signs, handling boundaries: it's all in the care guide for this exact fella. Start with the full Advanced guide, or click for the quick Open the Simple version →
