Warnings First

  • Never let the clay dry or crack. Eggs and juveniles lose moisture quickly, and a dried master culture may not recover.
  • Moist does not mean flooded. Keep the surface damp with no standing water film except briefly during a controlled harvest, then drain it back down.
  • Overfeeding is the fastest way to sour a culture. Use only a few yeast granules or a dusting, remove spoiled food, and reduce the next portion.
  • Keep the master culture clean. Use dedicated tools and never return animals, water, or substrate from a terrarium to the stock cup.
  • Use a secure lid and fine-mesh ventilation or brief scheduled airing. Springtails jump and run when disturbed, but excessive open ventilation dries the medium.
  • Do not intentionally release cultures outdoors. Escaped springtails are harmless to people and pets but can become a damp-area nuisance.

Simple Care

  • Keep the supplied clay evenly moist at all times, with no dry cracks and no standing water left on the surface.
  • Hold the culture at cool room temperature, ideally 65-72°F, away from windows, lamps, and heat mats.
  • Feed a tiny sprinkle of granulated active dry baker's yeast once or twice weekly; wait until nearly all of it is gone before adding more.
  • Open briefly during feeding for air exchange, then replace the secure lid. Cover any vents with fine mesh.
  • To harvest, add a little dechlorinated water, swirl gently, and pour the floating springtails into the target enclosure; drain the master cup back to evenly damp.
  • Keep a separate backup culture and never return material from a display enclosure to the clean master.

Enclosure & Microclimate
  • The product arrives on a clay medium, so the practical goal is to preserve that medium rather than replace it on arrival. Keep the medium evenly moist with no standing water. That is standard practice for porous-medium cultures, and it is not specific to clay.
  • Add dechlorinated or distilled water a few drops at a time along the cup wall. Water should spread through the clay without blasting animals off the surface or leaving a pool.
  • A covered cup slows water loss and contamination. Give brief air exchange during one or two weekly feedings, or use very fine mesh over tiny vents; large open vents trade a mold problem for a dried-culture problem.
  • Use the culture itself as the moisture gauge. A smooth damp surface, active animals, and a clean earthy or yeasty smell are normal. Cracks mean too dry; standing water, foul odor, or springtails massing away from the food means conditions need correction.
  • The product's flood-and-pour method is for controlled harvesting, not the resting condition. Add only enough clean water to float springtails, swirl gently, pour into a moisture-compatible enclosure, then tip off excess water so the clay returns to evenly damp.
  • Keep the clean master separate from terrariums. Use a dedicated pipette, damp fine brush, or pour cup, and never pour used enclosure water or substrate back into the master culture.

Feeding, Growth & Maintenance
  • Granulated active dry baker's yeast is the best-supported stock-culture food. Start with only a few granules or a very light dusting once or twice weekly and scale the amount to how quickly the colony clears it.
  • Remove old clumps, carcasses, and visibly spoiled food. A little incidental fungus is not an emergency, but heavy fungal or bacterial growth, slime, or a foul smell calls for smaller feedings and a clean backup culture.
  • Common laboratory strains reproduce without males. At about 20-21°C, eggs often hatch in 7-10 days and first egg laying commonly begins around three weeks, so a sparse starter can look slow before the population accelerates.
  • Crowding suppresses reproduction and makes contamination harder to manage. Split a dense culture before it crashes, and keep at least one backup that is not harvested heavily.
  • Individuals live for months under laboratory conditions, but the useful life of a master culture comes from continuous reproduction. Stable moisture, modest feeding, and clean transfers matter more than any single animal's lifespan.

  • Folsomia candida is an eyeless, unpigmented springtail roughly 1.5-3 mm long and is one of the standard organisms used in OECD and ISO soil-reproduction testing.
  • The strongest culture evidence centers on about 20 ± 2°C, continuously moist porous medium without a surface water film, and small dried-yeast feedings. Those are working culture conditions, not a reason to chase a room-humidity percentage.
  • Egg hatching drops sharply at high temperature; published work reports failed hatching above about 82°F. Keep the cup away from sunny windows, warm reptile shelves, and shipping heat after arrival.
  • For routine transfers, gently tap animals into place or use a damp fine brush. The supplied product also supports a controlled flood-and-pour harvest; drain the master culture immediately afterward. Dry fingers and static can strand animals on cup walls.
