Use This Guide Safely
- Confirm the exact animal. Match this guide to the species, locality, size, and life stage on your label. If the ID is uncertain, use the more conservative part of the range and ask before changing the setup.
- Change one thing at a time. Treat temperature and humidity as target zones, then watch posture, burrowing, drinking, feeding, and molt behavior before making another adjustment.
- Respect the handling boundary. If the guide says no handling, fast, defensive, or medically significant, plan transfers with catch cups, locked lids, and no bare hands. For serious bites, stings, or symptoms, seek emergency medical care.

- They also crash if kept wet without airflow. Isopods breathe through pleopodal lungs and suffocate in waterlogged, stagnant substrate as readily as they desiccate in a dry one.
- Do not use an open water dish. Isopods drown in standing water; moisture comes from damp substrate and moss.
Simple Care
- Leaf litter is food and cover.
- Keep a damp refuge.
- Ventilate the dry end. Vents low on two opposite walls give you a real gradient instead of a uniformly damp tub.
- Moisture from damp moss and substrate, not from an open dish: isopods drown in standing water. If you offer water, use a shallow cap packed with pebbles or grit.
- Treat them as a living colony, not a one-time cleaner: feed, calcium, moisture, and split crowded cultures.
- Do not add to every predator setup automatically.

Enclosure & Microclimate
- Cleanup crews need their own care: a moisture gradient (one damp end, one drier end), food, calcium, and plenty of hides.
- They thrive as a standalone bioactive bin, as a seeded crew inside a humid/tropical display, or as a grow-out colony you build up before adding to an enclosure.
- Very dry scorpion and desert tarantula enclosures will not support them. Keep those crews in a separate humid tub instead.
- The gradient is the whole design, and ventilation is what holds it. Put vents low on two opposite walls so air crosses the substrate and the dry end actually stays dry. In a sealed tub the damp end spreads until everything is uniformly wet, and a waterlogged bin is as fatal as a dry one: isopods breathe through pleopodal lungs on the underside and effectively drown in saturated, stagnant substrate.
- So both failure modes on this animal are moisture failures in opposite directions, and airflow is what gives you the middle ground. Hold the water in the damp end and let the vents keep the rest breathing, rather than sealing the tub to protect humidity.
- Judge by squeeze and smell rather than by gauge. The damp end clumps like a wrung-out sponge with no free water, the dry end reads dry, and the whole bin smells like forest floor. Sour smell or animals massing on the walls means the bin has gone too wet and too still.
- Do not put an open water dish in an isopod culture. They drown in surprisingly little standing water, and the colony gets everything it needs from damp substrate, moss, and vegetable matter. If you want a visible water source, use a bottle cap packed with pebbles or grit so there is no open surface, or a water-crystal gel instead.
- Mist the damp end and under the leaf litter and cork rather than over the whole tub. That recharges the humid refuge the colony breeds in and leaves the dry end available.
Feeding, Growth & Maintenance
- Use species-safe matching. Some predators eat them; some tiny molting animals may be bothered by dense cleanup crews.
- If you buy them as an add-on, check the humidity matches. They are not universal cleaners.
- Molting: isopods molt in two halves (the back half first, then the front a day or two later), and eat the shed, so a two-toned isopod is mid-molt, not sick. Keep a calcium source available and don't disturb molting animals.
Possible Origin / Range
- Likely native range: Tropical Americas or greenhouse-cosmopolitan culture stock, depending on the species sold as white isopods.
- Habitat translation: Humid leaf-litter culture with calcium and decomposing wood.
