Hogna carolinensis
Carolina Wolf Spider: Advanced Care Guide
Keeper Snapshot: A large active ground hunter that needs floor space, hides, and dry-to-moderate conditions.
Use This Guide Safely
- Confirm the exact animal. Match this guide to the species, locality, size, and life stage on your label. If the ID is uncertain, use the more conservative part of the range and ask before changing the setup.
- Change one thing at a time. Treat temperature and humidity as target zones, then watch posture, burrowing, drinking, feeding, and molt behavior before making another adjustment.
- Respect the handling boundary. If the guide says no handling, fast, defensive, or medically significant, plan transfers with catch cups, locked lids, and no bare hands. For serious bites, stings, or symptoms, seek emergency medical care.

Enclosure Format / Size Class
- terrestrial burrow setup for adults/large juveniles
Warnings First
- Fast hunter
- Can bolt
- Do not cohabitate
- Wolf spiderlings drown readily in open water. Keep pebbles in the dish, especially with an egg sac or a brood on the female's back.
Simple Care
- Give floor space and hides.
- Vents low on two opposite walls; a low terrestrial enclosure needs air crossing the floor, not just the lid.
- Keep a small moisture corner.
- Shallow water dish with pebbles in it so spiderlings cannot drown.
- Feed prey no larger than the spider can safely overpower.
Advanced Keeper Notes
Enclosure & Microclimate
- Wolf spiders are active visual hunters and need secure lids. They do not use webs like tarantulas for containment.
- Provide cork, leaf litter, and low hides. Avoid tall fall-risk setups.
- Because the enclosure is kept low, the ventilation needs to be low too. Put vents on two opposite walls at or just above the substrate so air crosses the floor and under the hides, which is where a ground-hunting spider spends its whole life. Lid vents on a shallow enclosure mostly exchange the band of air above the animal, and a damp corner in still air spreads until the whole floor is clammy.
- On a dry-leaning species the ventilation and humidity trade works in your favor. Airflow holds ambient at 45 to 60% by itself, so the damp corner and the dish are the only inputs and there is no reason to restrict vents.
- Judge by hand rather than by gauge. Open substrate reads dry, the damp corner holds shape when squeezed with no free water and dries back over several days.
- Keep a shallow water dish with pebbles or coarse grit so the waterline sits below the rim. This matters more on wolf spiders than on most species: the female carries her spiderlings on her abdomen, and when they disperse there can be dozens of pinhead spiders in the enclosure at once, all of which drown in an open dish.
- Mist the damp corner under a hide or the leaf litter rather than across the floor. That gives one humid microclimate for a premolt or gravid female while the rest of the floor stays dry and keeps exchanging air.
Feeding, Growth & Maintenance
- Females may carry egg sacs or spiderlings; plan for tiny escape-proof containment if gravid.
- terrestrial burrow setup works well because the spider uses ground space and hides.
- Molting: a premolt spider stops eating, dulls in color, and sits tight in its burrow or retreat. That's normal. Remove uneaten prey, don't disturb it, and wait a few days after the molt (until the new exoskeleton hardens) before feeding.
Possible Origin / Range
- Likely native range: North America and the United States in open grassland, scrub, and sandy burrow habitats.
- Habitat translation: Terrestrial burrow setup with dry surface and a secure retreat.
Advanced Keeper Details
- Do not over-humidify wolf spiders; provide a water source and let substrate gradients do the work.
- Feed carefully during premolt; wolf spiders can be injured by loose crickets in burrows.
- Shy, but very fast if you startle it. Bites are not common. Handling is still not recommended.
