Enclosure & Microclimate
- Care is similar to other Psalmopoeus: vertical retreat, good ventilation, moderate moisture, and careful containment.
- Juveniles grow quickly and should be moved before they become cramped in micro cups.
- This species runs at the damper end of the genus, which raises the stakes on airflow rather than lowering them. Put vents low on one wall, at or just above the substrate, and high on the opposite wall so air enters across the damp ground layer, rises past the cork, and exits above the retreat. That diagonal path is what lets you keep 65 to 80% ambient without the webbed retreat holding stale, saturated air.
- Ventilation and humidity trade against each other, so run them together. Feed moisture in from damp lower substrate and a water dish, and let the vents flow freely. Never close the enclosure up to reach the upper end of that humidity range.
- Judge by touch rather than by gauge. The lower substrate should be damp with no free water when squeezed, while the cork faces and upper webbing stay dry between mistings. Persistent condensation means the enclosure needs more airflow.
- Keep a shallow water dish with pebbles or coarse grit so the waterline sits below the rim. Slings drown in open dishes, and since juveniles grow fast here, the same pebble-filled dish carries safely across several rehouses.
- Mist the substrate at the base of the cork rather than into the retreat. That maintains the damp ground-level microclimate while moisture rises through moving air and the webbed retreat stays dry.
Feeding, Growth & Maintenance
- Avoid overdecorating small enclosures because it makes locating the spider harder during maintenance.
- Feeding schedule: slings 2×/week; juveniles weekly; adults every 1-2 weeks. Keep prey smaller than the abdomen, feed more often if it looks thin, less if it's plump. Juveniles grow fast and eat readily.
- Molting: a premolt Darth Maul turns sluggish, seals into its retreat, and stops eating for days or even weeks. Normal. Pull uneaten feeders, leave it alone, and wait 5-10 days after the molt before feeding again.
- Once it hits juvenile display size, a vertical bark setup shows it off well.
