The Malaysian Cherry Red, Scolopendra dehaani, is pure adrenaline: 8-plus inches of armored, vivid cherry-red, 21-pair-legged predator from Malaysia and Southeast Asia that moves like spilled mercury and hits prey like it has been waiting all week. There is genuinely nothing else in the lineup like watching one move.

It is also fast, defensive, in possession of a medically relevant bite, and an escape artist of legend; it will find any gap in a lid. So this is a watch-only, lock-it-down, experienced-keeper animal: forceps for everything. (Females are surprisingly devoted mothers, coiling protectively around their eggs, a rare soft moment.)
