Enclosure & Microclimate
- A dry, packable substrate with cork or rock-like retreats works well. This species values secure tight hides.
- Keep humidity low but do not dehydrate tiny juveniles; a small damp patch can be used briefly and allowed to dry.
- Give it real depth (3-4 inches or more of packable substrate so it can dig a proper burrow) plus a few flat bark pieces to hide under. Keep the surface dry; the burrow itself stays at a stable, slightly damper microclimate. A small water dish is worth having: arid scorpions like this will drink and also draw moisture from damp substrate.
- That burrow microclimate is the thing to protect, and ventilation is how you protect it. Vents low on two opposite walls, at or just above the substrate line, keep air crossing the burrow layer so the faint dampness down there stays fresh. Vent only through the lid and the surface dries while the burrow base holds still, damp air against the animal, which is the standard route to cuticle fungus on a semi-arid burrower.
- Airflow and ambient humidity trade off, and here that trade does the work for you. Good cross ventilation holds ambient at 35 to 50% without effort, so the water dish and the faint lower-layer moisture are the only inputs you manage. Never restrict vents to hold a reading.
- Judge by hand rather than by gauge. The top inch should read dry, the base of the burrow faintly cool and damp with no free water when squeezed. If the surface never dries after a mist, add airflow.
- Keep the water dish shallow and pack it with pebbles or coarse grit so the water sits below the rim. Tiny juveniles are the ones at risk of dehydration and also the ones that drown in an open dish, so the stones let you leave water permanently available without the hazard.
- Mist under the bark slabs rather than over the open surface. That recharges the damp pocket where the scorpion shelters and leaves the dry surface and the airflow intact, which is the contrast this species is built around.
Feeding, Growth & Maintenance
- Feeding: small crickets or roach nymphs around body length, smaller for instars; it hunts at night, so feed in the evening. Young eat every 4-7 days, adults every 1-2 weeks; remove uneaten feeders, especially before a molt.
- Growth: matures over roughly 5-6 molts. When it goes off food and seals up for a molt, take all feeders out, and leave the soft, pale new molt undisturbed until it hardens and darkens.
- Maintenance: spot-clean boluses and feeder remains; keep humidity low. A small damp patch briefly, then dry, not a humid tropical setup (this is the dry-habitat exception in Diplocentrus). Don't dehydrate tiny juveniles, but don't wet the enclosure. It settles into a packed-substrate hide and dislikes being moved.
Possible Origin / Range
- Likely native range: Arizona (USA) and Sonora (Mexico): 'sky island' mountain ranges; semi-arid rocky and oak-grassland slopes with a monsoon season, so dry overall but not true desert.
- Habitat translation: A deep dry burrow with a stable, slightly moister core; bark hides on top; light hydration via a water dish and brief damp patches.

- Provide compactable substrate and a starter hide; they settle better with tight cover.
- Track molts and hydration by behavior and body condition; do not turn it into a humid tropical setup.
- Room-temperature compatible: early spring in its native sky-island ranges drops well under 70°F, so it doesn't need supplemental heat (warmth just speeds growth and appetite).
- Adult size ~3-4 in; venom is mild. Note that most of the genus Diplocentrus lives in humid soil and caves, but D. spitzeri is the dry-habitat exception (Arizona/Sonora 'sky islands'), so the dry setup above is correct for this species specifically.
