Rhagodes sp.
Identity confidence: provisional. This is a genus, group, or trade name rather than a confirmed species. Treat it as the closest match we can stand behind, and use the more conservative end of any range.
Black Camel Spider / Solifuge: Advanced Care Guide
Keeper Snapshot: An extremely fast arid predator that needs dry substrate and serious containment.
Use This Guide Safely
- Confirm the exact animal. Match this guide to the species, locality, size, and life stage on your label. If the ID is uncertain, use the more conservative part of the range and ask before changing the setup.
- Change one thing at a time. Treat temperature and humidity as target zones, then watch posture, burrowing, drinking, feeding, and molt behavior before making another adjustment.
- Respect the handling boundary. If the guide says no handling, fast, defensive, or medically significant, plan transfers with catch cups, locked lids, and no bare hands. For serious bites, stings, or symptoms, seek emergency medical care.

Enclosure Format / Size Class
- burrow-style arid setup for larger specimens
Warnings First
- Extremely fast
- Can desiccate but should not be kept humid
- Not a true spider
- That contradiction resolves with airflow plus a drinking source: heavy ventilation and a dry enclosure, with water available in a dish rather than in the air.
Simple Care
- Dry, hot, secure.
- Heavy ventilation, low on two opposite walls; you cannot over-ventilate a solifuge.
- Use a hide and deep enough substrate to dig.
- Shallow water dish packed with pebbles or grit: this is how you prevent desiccation without adding humidity.
- Do not handle or chase.
Advanced Keeper Notes
Enclosure & Microclimate
- Solifuges are high-speed predators. Keep enclosure design simple so feeding and maintenance are controlled.
- Use dry substrate and a secure hide. Some depth allows digging and stress reduction.
- 'Can desiccate but should not be kept humid' is the central tension on this animal, and the resolution is to separate drinking water from ambient humidity. Ventilate heavily with vents low on two opposite walls so the enclosure stays genuinely dry and the scrape under the hide does not hold damp air, then provide water in a dish so the animal can drink whenever it needs to. Raising ambient humidity to prevent desiccation is the wrong lever and kills solifuges.
- On an extreme arid species there is no ventilation ceiling. Ambient at 25 to 40% is right and lower is harmless as long as the dish is there.
- Judge by hand rather than by gauge. Substrate reads dry from surface to scrape depth, and any spill around the dish dries back within a day.
- Keep the dish shallow and packed with pebbles or coarse grit so the waterline sits below the rim. A fast, erratic animal is more likely than most to end up in an open dish, and solifuges are poor at getting themselves out.
- Do not mist. The only microclimate this animal wants is the scrape under its hide, which runs slightly cooler on its own once the substrate is deep enough. Water goes in the dish, not in the air.
Feeding, Growth & Maintenance
- Hydration usually comes from prey, but avoid extreme dehydration. Do not convert the setup into a humid enclosure.
- Maintenance should be done over secondary containment because escape recovery is difficult.
- Molting: solifuges molt in a sealed burrow and are extremely fragile while teneral. If it has dug in and gone off food, leave it strictly alone until it re-emerges.
Possible Origin / Range
- Likely native range: North African or Middle Eastern arid habitats; exact species and locality should be treated as uncertain.
- Habitat translation: Warm dry sandy setup with a secure burrow start and high ventilation.
Advanced Keeper Details
- Solifuges have extreme metabolism; frequent small prey and hydration checks are safer than large meals.
- These live fast and die young. You keep one to watch it, not to have it for years.
