Ethmostigmus sp., the Gold Sumbawa Centipede, comes off Sumbawa Island, Indonesia, wearing warm gold-to-yellow legs against a dark, glossy body. The giveaway is in the head: on an Ethmostigmus the head plate does not overlap the first body segment, which is exactly how you tell it apart from the Scolopendra giants it gets confused with. Ours ship as 2 inch juveniles that grow into a solid mid-size giant centipede. Gold-legged, fast, and built to disappear underground.
Make no mistake: this is a large tropical centipede with medically significant venom, so it stays tools-only with zero handling at every single size. It is reclusive and quick, spending most of its life in a deep, packed, moisture-retentive burrow and bolting the second it is disturbed, so give it a humid tunnel zone, a shallow water dish, and a secure locking lid.
