Ornithoctonus costalis, the Thai Silver Earth Tiger, is a fast, defensive Old World fossorial out of the lowland forests of Thailand and Myanmar, in the same Ornithoctoninae group as the Cobalt Blue and the Asian earth tigers. Silvery-grey and built low and coiled like the dedicated burrower it is, adults stretch a serious 5 to 7 inches of legspan. It disappears into a tunnel of its own making, then explodes out of it when the mood turns.
Never handle this one. Old World tarantulas carry no urticating hairs to flick as a warning, so any defensive display is a straight bite risk, and bite reports for this group describe serious pain, swelling, and joint stiffness lasting days. Give it deep, moist, compactable substrate to tunnel through, strong cross-ventilation, and a snug starter burrow, then step back and let it work.
