Jet-black with veins of fire

The Venezuelan Suntiger, Psalmopoeus irminia, is one of the most striking spiders you can keep: deep velvet black with vivid orange chevrons blazing down the abdomen and orange flame-markings on the legs. It is a semi-arboreal from northern South America that lives in silk-lined tree hollows.

It is fast (keepers swear it is quicker than pokies twice its size) and defensive when cornered, but it carries no urticating hairs, which is why it is the go-to “first fast arboreal.” A spectacular display animal that teaches you to respect speed, and a quick grower that sizes up out of a starter kit into a tall corked home.
