The biggest assassin bug on Earth, and it eats like a vampire
Psytalla horrida, the Horrid King, is the largest assassin bug species in the world: a bold red-and-black West African savanna predator, the universal animal-kingdom signal for “leave me alone.” It hunts by ambush, then drives a hollow needle-like rostrum into prey, pumps in digestive saliva, and drinks the result back out. Yes, really.
That same saliva is the catch for keepers: a strike leaves a burning, swelling welt that can ache for hours (not dangerous long-term, but more than enough to wreck your afternoon). So it is forceps-for-everything, no exceptions. For the experienced invert keeper, though, it is a captive-bred, surprisingly hardy, genuinely alien predator, and it can even be raised in groups if you keep the feedings overlapping. One of the strangest, coolest things you can keep on a shelf.
The numbers live in the care guide. Enclosure size, temps, humidity, feeding schedule, premolt signs, handling boundaries: it's all in the care guide for this exact fella. Start with the full Advanced guide, or click for the quick Open the Simple version →
