Use This Guide Safely

  • Confirm the exact animal. Match this guide to the species, locality, size, and life stage on your label. If the ID is uncertain, use the more conservative part of the range and ask before changing the setup.
  • Change one thing at a time. Treat temperature and humidity as target zones, then watch posture, burrowing, drinking, feeding, and molt behavior before making another adjustment.
  • Respect the handling boundary. If the guide says no handling, fast, defensive, or medically significant, plan transfers with catch cups, locked lids, and no bare hands. For serious bites, stings, or symptoms, seek emergency medical care.

Enclosure Format / Size Class

  • Juveniles: Baby Buddy with escape-proof vents and a small cork piece.
  • Adults (to about 2.5 in): Bark Buddy with vertical cork and a damp retreat.

Warnings First

  • Stings are usually a sharp, burning pain that fades within about 30 minutes; swelling or itch can linger.
  • Anyone with allergic signs after a sting needs medical care right away.
  • Fast climber that fits through small gaps. Latch the lid and keep vents tiny.

Simple Care

  • House it alone.
  • Vertical cork and bark slabs, not just a ground hide.
  • Mostly dry sandy floor with one damp corner.
  • Shallow pebble dish so small animals can't drown.
  • Cross ventilation, low and high.

Advanced Keeper Notes

Enclosure & Microclimate
  • An obligate sandy-soil species in the wild. Use a sand-heavy mix that still holds a little moisture in the damp corner.
  • Vent low on one wall and high on the opposite wall so air rises past the bark.
  • Judge moisture by touch: bark dry, retreat corner lightly damp.
Feeding, Growth & Maintenance
  • Small crickets or roaches no longer than its body, weekly; tiny prey for juveniles.
  • Pull leftovers next day and never leave live prey with a molting scorpion.
Possible Origin / Range
  • Likely native range: Florida, the coastal plain of Georgia and coastal plain counties of Alabama, on sandy ground.
  • Habitat translation: Logs, loose bark and woodpiles on sandy coastal plain become a mostly dry sandy floor, vertical cork and bark slabs, and one damp retreat corner.
Advanced Keeper Details
  • Males are slimmer with longer tails; three yellowish stripes on a brown back are the field mark.
