Possible Origin / Range
- Likely native range: Southern and east-central Africa, east of the Kalahari sand system, from southern Eswatini north to the Democratic Republic of Congo and western Tanzania - recorded from Botswana, DRC, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Eswatini, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Isolated Eritrea and Sudan records are erroneous or another species, and the Namibian/southern Angolan population was split in the 2005 revision. The original Amazon River type locality was a mistake. Habitat is semi-arid to mesic savanna. The shared upstream supplier channel represents the batch as field collected but supplies no collection locality.
- Habitat translation: Species primary work places D. variegatus in semi-arid to mesic African savanna, sheltering by day in rock crevices or behind peeling bark and moving on surfaces at night. Translate that into ordinary warm room temperature, a damp substrate under effective airflow, multiple tall grippable cork faces, and an unobstructed hanging zone. This is a labelled synthesis of the published species ecology, laboratory conditions for congeners, and Big Z's house standards. No captive husbandry study or crevice microclimate measurement was found for this species.

- The 2005 primary revision confirms D. variegatus identity characters, 23.2-33.4 mm measured body length, ten-country range and the one-spine diagnostic. The owner-linked vendor comparator from the same upstream supply channel establishes that 3-5 inches is the channel's approximate leg-span label, not body length.
- A 2001 abstract called the social-study animals D. variegatus; the full 2006 paper identifies them as D. diadema. All communal outcomes are therefore treated as congeneric, not species evidence.
- Identified D. variegatus specimens in the revision were still alive at least five years after collection. This is a minimum observed captivity duration, not a published species lifespan.
- D. diadema maturity, sociality, molt interval, and postmaturity molt observations remain explicitly congeneric.
- The active broad Damon genus guide no longer carries the damon-variegatus alias; the routing collision was already resolved and no product change is needed.
- The target is absent from CITES Appendices valid 5 March 2026. Other domestic, source-provenance, and import/export legality remain unverified.
