- The same paper argues against chasing saturation: in the type cave's hottest, water-saturated, guano-covered corridors only 3 T. sheylae have ever been found, while 42 came from the colder chambers the authors expressly describe as 'less humid' (Euscorpius 304, p. 37). Above 85% RH is a floor to clear, not a target of 100%.
- The 85% / 36-hour figure is the describing authors' husbandry assertion, not a controlled trial: Euscorpius 304 reports no RH instrument, method, sample size, or tested gradient. In the same paper a congener's cage kept 'under drier conditions for several days' produced only gradual paling that reversed once humidity was raised, with no deaths reported. Treat a scorpion going paler as an early drying warning and correct the air humidity before it becomes an emergency.

Enclosure & Microclimate
- Most T. sheylae were found hidden under rocks in the cooler chambers (42 animals); only the few in the deepest hot, saturated corridors (3 animals) sat exposed on walls and floor. The genus account also states all Tityopsis need shady, humid places with plenty of refuges - rocks, leaf litter, rotten logs. Flat rock or cork cover is therefore directly supported by the primary source, not a conservative guess. Exact enclosure geometry and substrate recipe remain Big Z house choices.
- The >85% RH observation covers all Tityopsis maintained by the authors, wild-caught and captive-born. It is strong genus-level evidence but not a controlled T. sheylae threshold experiment.
- High air humidity is not the same as saturation. Keep substrate evenly damp without free water and retain minimal functional cross-ventilation to prevent stagnant air.
- The species was most abundant in cooler chambers and scarce in the hottest, but no chamber temperatures were reported. Avoid direct heat and record actual conditions.

Possible Origin / Range
- Likely native range: Known only from the type locality: Cueva del Indio, Mogote La Jaula, Escaleras de Jaruco, Tapaste, on the border of San Jose de Las Lajas and Jaruco Municipalities, Mayabeque Province, Cuba, at 190 m. The cave sits in the southern mogotes of Escaleras de Jaruco, a 15 x 5 km karstic limestone plateau isolated in the Habana-Matanzas Plain. The genus Tityopsis is endemic to western Cuba (Pinar del Rio, Artemisa, La Habana, Mayabeque and Matanzas Provinces) and is not known from Isla de la Juventud, from adjacent islets, or from outside Cuba; the one apparent exception, T. aliciae from Oaxaca, Mexico, was removed from the genus when Chaneke was described in 2014, so any Mexican record found while re-researching this species is obsolete. Repeated intensive searches in the forest outside the cave and in other mogotes of the same plateau produced no live animals, carcasses or exuviae, but those searches targeted epigean (surface) occurrence and no systematic survey of other caves is reported. The authors call it a true troglobite in the text and 'apparently a troglobite' in the Distribution section, so this guide calls it a presumed obligate cave-dweller. This is a known-occurrence statement, not a population estimate.

Advanced Keeper Details
- The species authority is Tityopsis sheylae Teruel & Rodriguez-Cabrera, 2020 (Euscorpius 304). The genus authority is Tityopsis Armas, 1974, erected as the subgenus Tityus (Tityopsis) and raised to genus rank by Armas, 1984.
- Prendini 2026 (Megataxa 19(2):270-378) records Tityopsis with 7 extant species and places it in subfamily Tityinae Kraepelin, 1905, stat. rev., the same subfamily as Tityus, Centruroides and Alayotityus. The Scorpion Files (updated 14.08.2026) lists the same seven. GBIF's backbone still shows only six because T. rolandoi (2024) has not been ingested; seven is current and six is a lag, not a correction.
- The 2020 revision identified 'not less than eight new taxa, which raise the diversity of this genus to at least 10 species'. Four of those eight were described in Part 1 (mulata, pumila, canizaresorum, sheylae); the other four are still undescribed, and the authors flagged further populations under study that may add more. Part 2 was never published and Rolando Teruel died in 2023.
- Adult total length is 23.62-26.76 mm in males and 32.11-34.00 mm in females, measured from four type specimens (Table 3); the diagnosis rounds these to 24-27 mm and 32-34 mm. Big Z's stock at 6-13 mm is far below the smallest measured adult and is juvenile, exact instar unknown.
- The description gives a light yellowish-brown, essentially immaculate adult and a pale yellowish-brown juvenile. The one Tityopsis described with an orange base colour is T. pumila. 'Orange Cave Scorpion' is a trade-search name only, not a diagnostic colour statement for this species.
