Phidippus morpheus, the Lucid Dreamer or Dream Jumping Spider, is a tiny stunner native to the US and Mexico, named for Morpheus, the god of dreams. At just 3/8 to 5/8 inch it wears dark and yellow-orange bumblebee markings, often with a reddish cast and jaws that flash iridescent in the light. Full-color vision and a curious, head-tilting personality mean this spider watches you as much as you watch it.
Completely harmless and family-friendly, it is one of the more handleable spiders out there: bold, interactive, and happy to explore your hand. Handle low over a soft surface, because it jumps. Despite the dreamy name it is a hardy, arid-adapted animal, so keep it drier than a tropical species: a tall, well-ventilated vertical enclosure with cork bark and twigs to climb, a thin dry substrate, and a light mist on one side every day or two to drink.
