Enclosure Format / Size Class

- Tiny ventilation openings, but plenty of them and placed low. Restricting airflow to hold warmth or humidity is how a dry-kept buthid ends up with cuticle fungus.

Advanced Keeper Notes
Enclosure & Microclimate
- Keep the enclosure simple: hide, substrate, hydration point, and controlled prey. Complexity creates places to lose sight of the animal.
- Small instars require secure micro enclosures with ventilation that cannot pass the body or metasoma.
- Tiny openings are the right call on a medically significant buthid, but the number and placement of them is what decides whether the animal gets any air. Use many small vents low on two opposite walls rather than a few larger ones up top. That gives you the same airflow across the substrate layer with none of the escape risk, and it is the difference between a hot dry enclosure and a hot still one.
- On a dry species the ventilation and humidity relationship is entirely in your favor. Airflow holds ambient at 35 to 50% without any effort, so hydration comes from prey and a small dish and there is never a reason to close vents down. If you find yourself restricting airflow to hold warmth, fix the heat source instead.
- Check by hand, not by hygrometer. Substrate should read dry from surface to base, with dampness only in the immediate area you misted or around the dish, and it should dry back within a day. A monthly mist on one half that is still damp a week later means the box is not moving air.
- Keep the water dish very shallow and pack it with pebbles or coarse grit so the waterline sits below the rim. This species produces small instars that drown in a dish an adult uses safely, and the stones fix that completely. On the smallest instars a bottle cap with grit is the right scale.
- Do not mist generally. The microclimate this species uses is the underside of its hide and the base of its scrape, which naturally sits a little cooler and damper than the open surface. A brief spritz under the hide once a month recharges that pocket. Spraying the whole enclosure just raises ambient across the board, which is the opposite of what a dry buthid wants.
Feeding, Growth & Maintenance
- Feeding: small crickets or roach nymphs no bigger than the body. Distinctly small prey for instars. Young eat every 4-7 days, adults roughly weekly to every other week; remove anything uneaten within a day so a loose feeder can't harass it. Drop prey with long tongs over a catch container, never by hand.
- Growth: about 5-6 molts to maturity. A premolt animal stops eating and stays hidden: clear out every feeder then, and don't disturb the soft, pale new molt until it hardens. Tiny first-instar young are extreme escape risks; size every vent and gap to the metasoma.
- Maintenance: keep the layout deliberately bare (hide, substrate, hydration point), so you never lose sight of the animal before opening. Spot-clean boluses and feeder parts with tongs; hydrate with prey plus an occasional tiny damp corner or small dish rather than misting. No casual maintenance: secondary containment and long tools every time, because the venom is potentially lethal.

- Likely native range: India and Pakistan: arid scrub, rocky hill country, and very often synanthropic (in and around rural homes, walls, and debris piles), which is a big part of why it accounts for so many human envenomations.
