About this Fella
Salmon Pink Bird Eater Tarantula for sale from Big Z's (Lasiodora parahybana). Comes with a Spice rating and a care guide, and ships packed for the weather.
Half an inch now. One of the largest tarantulas on earth later.
Lasiodora parahybana, the Salmon Pink Bird Eater, is Brazilian, and by leg span it sits among the largest tarantulas in the world. It is also a fast grower by hobby standards. The common name comes from the salmon-coloured setae. These arrived at 0.5 inches, the stage right before the growth curve gets interesting.
Plan for a large terrestrial from the start: floor space rather than height, a hide, and moderate moisture in the substrate. The enclosure that suits a half-inch sling will not suit it for long.
Spice Level 3: Intermediate. It flicks urticating hair freely, and handling is not recommended. Read the matched Big Z's care guide before it arrives.
Full care is in the care guide. It covers enclosure size, temperature, humidity, feeding, molting signs and handling limits for this species. Read the Advanced guide, or the shorter Simple guide →

Brazilian Salmon Pink Birdeater (LP) Group
Big Z's Quick Verdict: The LP (Lasiodora parahybana): one of the biggest, most popular tarantulas in the hobby, 8-10 inches across and fast-growing. Bold and hardy, but its urticating hairs are sharper than a Brachypelma's, and a fall can rupture the abdomen.
Group: Industry StaplesDifficulty: Spice 3: IntermediateSetup: Large terrestrialHandling: Not recommended, urticating hairs
Use This Guide Safely
- Confirm the exact animal. Match this guide to the species, locality, size, and life stage on your label. If the ID is uncertain, use the more conservative part of the range and ask before changing the setup.
- Change one thing at a time. Treat temperature and humidity as target zones, then watch posture, burrowing, drinking, feeding, and molt behavior before making another adjustment.
- Respect the handling boundary. If the guide says no handling, fast, defensive, or medically significant, plan transfers with catch cups, locked lids, and no bare hands. For serious bites, stings, or symptoms, seek emergency medical care.

Recommended Big Z's Setup
- Baby Buddy: slings.
- Burrow Buddy: juveniles.
- Large custom enclosure: adults, prioritize floor space over height.
Critical Notes
- A fall can rupture the abdomen and kill it: prioritize floor space over height, and don't let it get obese.
- Type-I urticating hairs, sharper than a Brachypelma's.
- Gets huge fast. Plan an adult enclosure at least 18x12x12 in.
- A wide, low enclosure gets still corners. Vent low on two opposite walls so the far end keeps exchanging air.
Care Basics
- Moist-side-of-medium substrate with a large water dish; pebbles inside so slings can't drown.
- Cross ventilation low on two opposite walls, scaled to the footprint.
- Floor space matters more than height.
- Feed well, but watch the abdomen: power-feeding plus a fall is fatal.
Feeding, Growth & Maintenance
- The benchmark feeding response in the hobby: slings 2-3x weekly, juveniles weekly, adults a half-dozen crickets every couple of weeks. Avoid pinkies.
- Don't power-feed: an oversized abdomen plus a fall is the classic cause of death. Genetics, not feeding rate, mostly drive size and growth speed.
- Molting: it turns sluggish, seals up, and refuses food for days or weeks first. Pull uneaten feeders and wait 5-10 days after the molt before feeding again.

Advanced Keeper Notes
Enclosure & Microclimate
- The genus: L. parahybana (the giant), L. klugi (Bahia scarlet birdeater), L. difficilis, L. itabunae. Native to humid northeastern Brazilian Atlantic forest.
- Adults need a low, wide enclosure (at least 18x12x12 in) with deep substrate to bulldoze and a large permanent water dish.
- Keep substrate moist-leaning but ventilated: overflow the dish rather than misting on a schedule.
- Vents go low on two opposite walls, at or just above the substrate, scaled to the footprint, or the far corners go sour with a big messy feeder.
- Overflow into one corner or wet the substrate under the hide, rather than misting on a schedule. One damp spot beats a uniformly damp floor.
Possible Origin / Range
- Likely native range: Northeastern Brazil: humid Atlantic forest.
- Habitat translation: Large low-and-wide terrestrial enclosure, moist-leaning substrate deep enough to bulldoze, and a big permanent water dish.
Advanced Keeper Details
- Adult size 8-10 in leg span (max about 11 in), a fast grower: 0.25 in to 5 in in 12-16 months at 75-82°F with weekly feeding. Females live 12-15 years, males 3-5.
- Egg sacs are enormous (1,000-2,000+ slings), so captive-bred stock is cheap and plentiful: no reason to keep a wild-caught animal.
- Slings and juveniles are skittish hair-flickers; adults are usually confident but unpredictable. Do maintenance tool-based, calm, and face-away.
