Enclosure & Microclimate
- A dry sand and topsoil mix, a water dish and a hide is the entire setup. One of the least demanding tarantulas in the hobby.
- More airflow is always better here. Ambient sits at 35-50% on its own and can drop lower without concern; it hydrates from the dish, not the air.
- Low vents on two opposite walls keep the area under the hide from holding a damp pocket after a dish spill.
- Judge by hand rather than by gauge. Substrate should read dry except right around the dish, and any spill should dry back within a day or two.
- Keep the dish full with pebbles or coarse grit so the waterline sits below the rim; this species takes years to mature, so it stays small enough to drown for a long time.

Possible Origin / Range
- Likely native range: Southern Arizona: Grand Canyon south to the Colorado River, into southwestern New Mexico. Sonoran Desert scrub and dry grassland. No Mexican range is confirmed.
- Habitat translation: A dry, open-floor terrestrial enclosure: sand and topsoil mix, a hide she can get completely under, and a permanently full water dish with pebbles in it. No misting, no damp corner, and floor space rather than height.
Advanced Keeper Details
- No external stridulation organs and only type I urticating setae, so there is no audible warning before she flicks hairs or bolts.
- The urticating patch runs roughly 9,800-11,400 hairs per square millimeter, with over a million sheddable hairs between molts.
- Not CITES-listed (unlike Aphonopelma albiceps, which is Appendix II).
- No confirmed human bite case is on record for this genus; hairs and falls are the real risk, not the bite.
