About this Fella

Brilliant Jumping Spider for sale from Big Z's (Phidippus clarus). Comes with a Spice rating and a care guide, and ships packed for the weather.

Phidippus clarus (Brilliant Jumping Spider)

Red, orange and black with a meadow attitude. Brilliants are the showy field jumper of the eastern US, the one you find perched on top of a flower stalk sizing up anything that lands. It hunts by sight, takes prey its own size, and eats like it has somewhere to be. Every numbered listing is the exact spider in the photos, so pick the one you like and grab it today.

Why do hobbyists keep Phidippus clarus?

  • Personality: bold and busy. It patrols the top of its enclosure, tracks movement and pounces on anything that moves.
  • Pick Your Spider: each numbered listing is one specific spider, photographed so you choose the exact one you want.
  • Big Appetite: a flower-top hunter that takes prey up to its own size, so feeding is the fun part.
  • Desk-Sized Setup: a small, tall, vented enclosure with a few stems is all it needs.

How should Phidippus clarus be kept?

  • Adult Size: body under half an inch; females run larger than males.
  • Enclosure: a small, tall, well-vented enclosure with twigs, stems or cork up high for its silk retreat. Vent low on one wall and high on the opposite one, and keep the lid secure.
  • Temperature: 72 to 82 degrees F, with bright room light but never direct sun.
  • Humidity: 50 to 65 percent with strong airflow. Keep the substrate dry.
  • Water: lightly mist one side wall every day or two so it can drink the droplets. Never mist the spider.
  • Diet: small flies, roaches or crickets sized to the spider, two or three a week.
  • Temperament: bold and quick, and easy to lose. Handling is not recommended; open the lid low over a table.

Are there any additional notes or considerations?

  • You Get This Spider: the exact spider in the photos. Size/stage: Subadult - Adult. Sex is unconfirmed.
  • Wild-Caught: field-collected.
  • Molting: it seals itself into a silk retreat up top. Leave it alone, pull any feeders, and wait a few days after it comes out before feeding.
  • Lifespan: one season. Adults show up in early summer and females outlast males, so this is a spider to enjoy now.
  • Spice Level 1: Kid Friendly. Mild venom, bites are rare, and it is a no-handling display pet. One spider, shipped live on FedEx Overnight. Live Arrival Guarantee on overnight orders.

Full care is in the care guide. It covers enclosure size, temperature, humidity, feeding, molting signs and handling limits for this species. Read the Advanced guide, or the shorter Simple guide →
