About this Fella

Oklahoma Brown Tarantula for sale from Big Z's (Aphonopelma hentzi). Spice-rated keeper notes, care guidance, and live-arrival packing where eligible.

The beginner tarantula that can outlive the keeper who bought it

Aphonopelma hentzi, the Oklahoma Brown Tarantula (sold regionally as the Texas Brown), is the classic American spider: a sturdy 4 to 5.5 inch terrestrial in warm earth brown, built low and unbothered. It roams the plains of the central and southern US, digging burrows and waiting out the years. This is the tarantula most people picture when they picture a tarantula, and it wears the role well.

Temperament is the selling point: calm, slow growing, and forgiving, with a wide tolerance for humidity and nothing worse than a kick of urticating hairs when startled. It is a genuine beginner animal, one of the most easygoing tarantulas in North America, and it can outlast the keeper who bought it. Give it a simple terrestrial setup with real digging depth and it thrives. The care guide has the build and the boundaries.

The numbers live in the care guide. Enclosure size, temps, humidity, feeding schedule, premolt signs, handling boundaries: it's all in the care guide for this exact fella. Start with the full Advanced guide, or click for the quick Open the Simple version →

I couldn’t be happier with my experience buying from Big Z. Easily one of the best invertebrate sellers I’ve dealt with. The animals arrived healthy, well-packed, and exactly as described. It’s obvious they take great care with their livestock and shipping.

Communication was excellent from start to finish, and they answered my questions quickly and professionally. If you’re looking for high-quality invertebrates from a trustworthy seller, I highly recommend Big Z. I’ll definitely be purchasing from them again!
