Big enough to be mistaken for a tarantula, and it runs its prey down on foot

Hogna sp. "Pine Giant" (undescribed trade name), the Pine Giant Wolf Spider, comes out of the Florida pine flatwoods as one of the most impressive native wolf spiders in the trade. It is an undescribed Hogna sold under a trade name rather than a validly published species, and it is a different animal from Big Z's Carolina and Miami wolf spiders. We sell it small at 1 to 2 inches, but it grows into a genuinely large, heavy, thick-bodied true spider with the presence of something twice its price.

This is a ground hunter, not a web-builder: it chases prey down on foot and would rather bolt than brawl, though it will bite defensively if you corner it. The bite is painful and not medically significant, on par with the other large Hogna and Tigrosa species we carry, but these are fast, so handling is discouraged and the lid stays secure. Rated Spice 3 and best for intermediate keepers, it wants a wide floor with a few inches of sand-and-soil substrate to burrow in, leaf litter, a hide, and a shallow water dish.
