Scolopendra viridis (Green Striped Centipede)

A native Scolopendra from the Southeastern US, in a color form we haven't carried before. These Green Striped animals have a dark olive body, pale tan legs and stout tail legs, and they come in at 2 to 3 inches. Scolopendra viridis stays small for a Scolopendra, but it is fast, strong and good at finding gaps, with a painful bite, so it rates spicy for its size. These are wild-caught. Grab a Green Striped today if you want a native centipede with real attitude.

Why do hobbyists keep Scolopendra viridis?

  • Native Species: a US centipede from Florida and the Gulf coastal plain.
  • Small Footprint: a Scolopendra that stays on the small side.
  • Color Variety: color varies across its range. This form runs dark olive with tan legs.

How should Scolopendra viridis be kept?

  • Adult Size: small for a Scolopendra. Ours are 2 to 3 inches.
  • Enclosure: 3 to 5 inches of firm, packed, diggable substrate with bark cover, and a lid that locks. A Burrow Buddy filled deep works well.
  • Temperature: 72 to 82 degrees F. A night drop is fine.
  • Humidity: 50 to 65 percent. Run a damp-to-dry gradient and let it pick its spot.
  • Water: a shallow dish, kept full.
  • Diet: one prey item sized to the centipede every 5 to 10 days, fed with long tongs.
  • Temperament: fast, strong and quick to bite. Mild venom, but the bite is painful with local swelling. No handling at any size: long tongs and a lidded catch cup.

Are there any additional notes or considerations?

  • Wild-Caught: sold at 2 to 3 inches.
  • Escape Risk: it flattens through gaps that look too small. Check the lid seal every time.
  • Locate First: find the centipede before you open the enclosure.
  • Spice Level 4: Advanced. One animal, shipped live on FedEx Overnight, Monday to Wednesday. Live Arrival Guarantee on overnight orders.

Full care is in the care guide. It covers enclosure size, temperature, humidity, feeding, molting signs and handling limits for this species. Read the Advanced guide, or the shorter Simple guide →
