Pterinochilus murinus in the Usambara orange form is the spider the hobby nicknamed the OBT, and the colour is not an exaggeration: a grown one is a burnt-orange starburst with the carapace pattern radiating out from the centre. It comes out of East Africa, and at 1 inch these are slings already laying down silk faster than they can outgrow it. Adults reach roughly 5 to 6 inches across and get there quickly.
Nothing about this animal is subtle. It is fast, defensive, quick to stand up and stay standing, and a strict no-handling species for keepers who already have Old World experience. What it wants is easy to give: dry substrate deep enough to burrow, vertical cork anchor points because it webs heavily and goes semi-arboreal, and a secure enclosure you open with a plan. - Dense webbing blocks airflow. Vent low on two opposite walls so air moves under the silk.
- Don't mist the web. Soaked silk leaves a damp mat with dead air behind it.

Advanced Keeper Notes
Enclosure & Microclimate
- The web fortress baffles airflow. Lid-vent air stops on top of the silk. Low vents on two opposite walls move air under it, so the inside stays dry, not just dry-looking.
- On a dry species more airflow costs nothing. It holds 45-60% by itself, so the dish is the only input. No reason to restrict vents.
- Judge by touch: substrate dry away from the dish, webbing dry, no condensation on the glass behind the silk. Damp webbing is the early warning.
- Want a damp spot? Put it at the dish or under a cork piece, never on the web.
Feeding, Growth & Maintenance
